Say it like the British

Mrs. Mogul's post, The British Are Coming And Soon You'll Be Saying "Smashing" got me thinking of other British words I like. After living in the east end of London for six months back in 2002 (that long ago?) I picked up the following British terms and slang:

Wonky – Just sounds funny.

Brilliant – A more special way to say awesome.

Dodgy - My flatmate introduced me to our broken stove by saying it was dodgy.

Unlucky - When anyone would miss a shot in volleyball, they would politely go “oh, unlucky” instead of cursing or saying “my bad.”

Rubbish – The fancy way of saying garbage or disagreeing with someone.

Smart – I know this is a common word, but they would use it to describe how people were dressed and I thought that was smart.

It’s all gone Pete Tong – mean it’s all gone down the crapper.

Speaking of the Brits, I just ordered my 2nd shipment of white tea from the English Tea Store online. Good stuff.

My British friend used "star" a lot and I liked it.  "Stacy you're a star for picking that up at the store for me!"

I also liked queue instead of line.

I, on the other hand, think it's RUBBISH to use the word queue.  One, there are too many vowels.  I think it hasn't the most vowels of any word -> queueing.

Why can't they use the word line.  Line up.  Where's the line?  It's only one syllabel, too.  HHHmmm...

Hey SL,

See I was always confused when I heard "queue" i never got used to it. The first day there I was told to stand in a queue and it took me a moment to understand I did a quick look around for an actual Q, lol

For some reason I really like "trousers", too.  And the South Africans have a funny phrase "It's gone all pear-shaped" much like your Pet Tong!

Crumbs, I had no idea that by using these words I was making myself hard to understand...

... I have mastered sidewalk not pavement and zucchini not courgette when talking to my cross-pond friends, but I had no idea we differed so much on the basics...

Thanks for the lesson!

(Popping by from Mrs Mogul btw!)

Also, quite sadly, in British English "queuing" is spelt without the last e so it loses some of its splendid vowelage... How sad!

I never heard wonky. Ahhh the cockney slang..also there's dog and bone (phone) and apples and pears (stairs). I think the slang is leaving england though...not too many people speak it anymore. the old timers are all in the retirement homes

Some of the most fun we had Down Under was sitting one night with some of our hosts and talking about the different words we use and what they used.  My favorite was stubby holder which is a koozie. I think a stubby is a bottle of beer as I recall.  I also liked eskkie instead of cooler and found out that it was actually a brand name.  Sort of like how we call all tissues Kleenex.  And I'm fond of saying my mobile instead of cell and that things are "grand" which I picked up in Dubai.

Look at me all country name dropping and acting like I'm somebody. LMAO
