North Korea or Jon Benet

The following cartoon was in Newsweek's recap of the year's best political quotes and cartoons and it gave me a chuckle. It's too true. North Korea and it's nuclear building and testing scares the hell out of me, they actually have WMD, yet we aren't covering this issue enough.

It also bugs me that it seems we'll never know who killed Jon Benet. Her little adult face has been staring at me from supermarket rags for over a decade now and frankly I need closure.

On a totally unrelated note, my mother arrives in California today for a 5 day visit. I'm really looking forward to showing her my life out here so when we talk, which is all the time, she'll have a better idea. So far we have a girls brunch in Malibu planned with friends, walking around Venice, bowling and other activities. We're skipping the CA tourist stuff since she's been to LA and Santa Monica area a few times already, just not since I lived here. I'll report back later.

PS:  My friend and former coworker, PJ, is in the NY Times article: Beginning the Climb to the Penthouse. He beat me, since his NY Times interview has photos of him, damn. You can see mine here though ;)

I guess it's all about the rumor.  When we only thought Iraq had WMD, we were all over it, but when we know N Korea has them, so what?  Just like we knew about the mother who drove her four kids strapped in car seats/seat belts into the lake to drown (yawn), but a little girl who was killed by a supposed stocker..or was it her parents....or a child molester from the neighborhood?  It's all about the intrigue, the teaser......details at eleven.

Alright, but why do we care about Benet Ramsey?

That sailor that was found just recently... I only care because his wife submitted a very good picture of him. If he wasn't as attractive as he is, I probably wouldn't care.

Why do individual cases make the news?

When is the Darfur region of Sudan going to make the 11pm news?

To me, this cartoon means the general public is too dumb (or lazy) to care about real issues in the world.  I would guess that 70% of our nation doesn't even know who Kim Jong is and why he's such a headache for the US.  I bet 70% of the nation can tell you who Jon Benet is.  Does that mean the mainstream is ignorant, lazy  or both?

Maybe current events are less important than world news....?  I wish it was the opposite and there was less focus on celebs and their senseless acts.
