The Caffeine Workout
I read somewhere that a half an hour before you head to the gym you should have a cup of coffee or some sort of caffeine, that way you will increase the duration of your workout and be more awake and up to exercising.

Since I head to the gym after work and am usually a bit tired, I thought this made a lot of sense, I also have a Starbucks conveniently located at the base of my building. So, I would order a latte and head to Crunch. As a result I was going at least 5 mins more on the Elliptical machines and doing more reps. Who knows if it's a placebo effect or indeed the caffeine, but it was helping. I also felt more jazzed while there.

Until I finally realized that the calories that I was burning were only the calories that I just consumed while drinking the sugary, fancy latte's I had just ordered like the White Chocolate Mocha or Cinnamon Dolce Latte. I'm not a big coffee fan though and these are the only coffees that I drink, since they taste more like a hot chocolate or warm milk.

I love tea though, but usually drink decaffeinated since I'm a wimp when it comes to caffeine in the first place.Before I go to the gym now I'm going to have a cuppa Earl Gray or Green Tea--hold the calories--for that extra energy surge that I need.

I also just ordered some sample packs of loose leaf white tea from Adagio Teas, they come in these cute little tins too that look adorable on my counter. Let me know if you'd like me to email you a free $5 gift certificate, just put your email in the comments section and I will. FYI the sample packs cost only $1-3.

Aw Vera, I'm sorry, go have your coffee, just don't go all fancy like the ones that I order since they are seriously like drinking liquid sugar.

T - I have yet to order any of the tea from Adagio Teas since you sent me the gift certificate. I'll have to give it a try, soon!

Very amusing that you actually read that tea helps workouts. I tend to drink tea prior to my workouts, but because I like it, not because of the caffeine benefit. Go figure that I am actually doing something good for my body subconsciously.

So YOU'RE one of those people I see drinking coffee while working out! LOL! Actually I never understood that concept and while the extra energy notion does kinda make sense, I think I'll just stick to my water.

You're probably better off sticking to water Marilyn, but I was only drinking the coffee before going to workout not during, otherwise I'd sure be the annoying person who spills it everywhere.

Hey Tara,
I would doubt what you are experiencing is a placebo affect. Caffeine is actually a banned substance in some sporting events because it increases performance. The idea of drinking coffee or tea before a workout would make me sick though If you were really interested in using caffeine as a workout aid, I'd suggest trying a caffinated chewing gum. That way you don't have to waste time making tea or standing in line at starbucks. I would however suggest you drink a bunch of water cause the caffeine will dehydrate you, therefore lowering performance. I'm also not sure I'd use it if you work out pretty hard everyday. Pushing yourself beyond normal limits will tire your body and might hinder your workout the next day. However, if you only go a once or twice a week, the caffeine strategy might be benefitial.

Thank you Eric, I'll look into the gum, but I don't mind making tea since I normally drink it anyway and yeah I do only go 2-3 times a week so I'm not really pushing myself. I'm a wimp so if I am tired I'll get off the machines early and leave the gym without much guilt.

Something to try the next time you are at the gym: Eat a piece of peppermint gum or candy, sugarless of course. The peppermint does something for you when you hit your down cycle on the treadmill.

Tara;

Caffeing mixed with exercise has proved fatal to some people.

Caffein increases your resting heart rate; combined with exercise it is possible to push your heart past it's maximum.

This would result in a heart attack.
