Call me, call me any, anytime?
A friend of mine says it's disrespectful if a guy calls you while driving. She says it's just an afterthought and that they are simply fitting you into their schedule when it's convenient for them. Calling while walking or driving also gives them the excuse not to give you their full attention. She thinks they are simply bored while in transit and that it shows that you are not worthy of a call from their home, during their personal time.

I get what she's saying and it makes some sense. I personally save my important calls for when I'm alone in my apt and won't be disturbed, and make the calls that I'm obligated to make while walking to and from the subway. Then again, maybe returning calls while commuting can make you seem like you're on the go and cooler than you are? Maybe, she's got me over analyzing!

Either way, she got me thinking of my recent relationships and the phone calls that I received. And most are usually while my guys were driving. The engine and the turned down radio could be heard in the background of their voice mails. Even during a live call, they'd sometimes stop the conversation to mention traffic, or some jerk that is tailgating them or just cut them off. I know my mother always calls me when she's on the road, because she doesn't like the isolation and uses me as her phone whore.

Wow. Your friend may be right. After I read your post I sat back and started analyzing my calling habits, and I have to admit that I make most of my routine "have to check in" calls while I am driving.

The people I call when I am back in my room or at my office, those are the ones that I am more interested in focusing my attention with.

So I think your friend has a point, but consider that while a call while driving may indicate a lowered level of focus, I think anyone that I call while driving has become a person I am comfortable around.

Now I will begin to evaluate how I feel about particular people by where I am when I want to call them.

I see where she is going with this. The only time I have during the day to call anyone is in my car. At work I can't get a phone call in edgewise. But I have caught myself calling during a commute just to be calling.

Is this a joke? I save important calls for when I'm driving: if I'm at home I'm doing something else, and when I'm driving I'm basically just sitting there waiting to be at my destination. With all that free time, I love making phone calls. It's a good time to get things done or to while away the time talking with a friend.

But, if a girl I were dating got upset at me for calling her when I was driving, I would drop her immediately. Personally, I can't conceive of putting up with that kind of overanalysis; I would just assume she was upset about something else and just looking for a fight. So maybe I'm not a good person to say, maybe (here it comes) your mileage may vary. Oh how I love it.

As a phone-phobic, I prefer to make my social calls while I'm in the midst of something else - whenever there's a lull in the conversation I can always make some comment about traffic or other people in the supermarket, etc. I need background activity to distract me from the intimidating intimacy that is a phone call.

So it isn't that calling while I'm walking/driving is an afterthought - quite the opposite: I'll often plan to make calls while I'm on my way to class, etc. Otherwise I might not call at all.

'Course, I'm not a guy, so I don't know if it still applies. :)

gee ...I think I just make phone calls when ever I can think of them. And well in the car my mind wanders and I think of these things.

I just hate to talk on the phone period.

Hmm, I wonder if that's why my parents have started to give me grief about calling while driving. It does make sense, but I do try to call them at home sometimes too.

Not really doing blogs today--but when I was always fighting with the cable company and other places--but mainly them--I would call on the long express ride to the end of Queens. Would only do it, if the bus was half empty and find an uncrowded place. Since I don't like to raise my voice in public and never knew who knew my mom and by extension me, I would talk in a very low voice. Found calls like that made in public made me a nicer person. But now I almost never have to call the cable company and they're always very nice!

Loved your "failure" post, and no I hadn't seen it
